about

Yellow Egg is an album of music written and recorded by Cooper Evans. It is the first of a two part series of solo albums from the two main songwriters of bird.bird.

Yellow Egg has nine songs total comprised of three groups of three. There are three songs that I wrote to be sold to other artists, commercials, music in the background of television shows but they never got picked up. They are very refined and accessible but often less creative and they don’t push the envelope. I call these “Wax Bananas.” Then, there are three songs that have been floating around my laptop for years. They weren’t complete to the point that they could be released, or brought into a band to play them live, but I liked them enough that I couldn’t bring myself to delete them. For this album, I went back into these projects and re-recorded, re-arranged, and re-mixed until I felt they were ready. I find these songs youthful, strange, and fun. These are the “Dried Berries.” Then, there are three songs written just for me and just for this album. These songs aren’t trying to be anything except enjoyable to my ears and hopefully yours to. They are “Fresh Fruit.” This album has been in progress for five years. It was recorded in ten different locations and has been mixed on at least ten different plane rides.

Thanks for listening,
Cooper

released November 3, 2016

All instruments were performed, recorded, and mixed by Cooper Evans with the exception of the last chorus of “I Stayed Up” when Sarah Krier adds her beautiful vocals to the mix.

Thank you to Hayley Lim for her power of graphic design, and Katie Romagnoli for her power of illustration. They helped me create the album cover.

Track Name: Return To Mine
When I can’t fill
When I can’t fill the gaps between your fingers
When I can’t be
When I can’t be the thought that kindly lingers

I know that you're know that you're mine
We may be far apart but in time
I know that we don’t need a sign
Cause our paths always re-combine

Forever I’ll keep you in my mind
As the one that I left behind
I promise I’ll give you all you want in life
When you finally return to mine

Hey!

Whoa yeahs

When I can’t tuck
When I can’t tuck the hair behind your ear
We will have time apart, We will not always be near
I’ll have to tell myself, remind my pain and fear

That I know that I know that you're fine
Maybe far apart but in time
Together we’re something divine
Our love, Let it realign

Forever I’ll keep you in my mind
As the one that I left behind
I promise I’ll give you all you want in life
Now just come return to mine

Whoah yeahs

Forever I’ll keep you in my mind
As the one that I left behind
I promise I’ll give you all you want in life
Now just come return to mine

Whoah yeahs and now just come return to mine
Track Name: Flow
don’t hold my hand
cuz I don’t believe in always
just understand
i’ll give you my love but I don’t love cliche

one kiss and then its over I used to think that ends it
but then I grow up a little older and i’m inclined to bend it
one path and then it’s over a life that I can’t blend with
you gotta step out and be bolder, I highly reccomend it

we can take this partnership our own way
we can take it anywhere i don’t know oh
everybody sticking with there one bae
but I prefer to keep it with some flow

I don’t know what we can call us,
There’s no rules you dont know, make it up as we go
no underlying expectations,
i don’t know that we can date oh all I know is we can both flow
no pressure to be together
I know is we can both flow

no box that we’ll outgrow
just love now and we can flow

queen size for three
six hands and they’re all so tender

sunrise and then it’s over it’s an all love one night bender
I know it’s one to remember and we never knew their gender

we can take this partnership our own way
we can take it anywhere i don’t know oh
everybody sticking with there one bae
but I prefer to keep it with some flow

I don’t know what we can call us,
There’s no rules you dont know, make it up as we go
no underlying expectations,
i don’t know that we can date oh all I know is we can both flow
no pressure to be together
I know is we can both flow

no box that we’ll outgrow
just love

and I’m never gonna say that
this comes easy
all that heart break
ad em up add em up add em up

but I’m never gonna let that
slow transaction
so much compasion
add it up add it up add it up

I don’t know what we can call us,
There’s no rules you dont know, make it up as we go
no underlying expectations,
i don’t know that we can date oh all I know is we can both flow
no pressure to be together
I know is we can both flow

no box that we’ll outgrow
just love now and we can flow
Track Name: I Stayed Up
I walked out
I walked out way too far
I stayed up
I stayed up far too long

Cuz I can’t miss out
I can’t say no
If there’s a car with friends driving someplace different, that’s where I want to go

Soak it in
Don’t take a bite, I devour
What I’m given, I won’t waste, I waste not an hour

Cuz I can’t say no
I can’t miss out
Treat my life like a peach and each bite like a treat, that’s what I’m all about

This isn’t a curse, no it’s a blessing
Though it could be reverse, I’m just guessing

I don’t know, I don’t know
I don’t know, I don’t know

I oh, whoah, I don’t know

I walked out
I stayed up
I soaked it in
But for what?

I don’t know, I don’t know
I don’t know, I don’t know

I don’t know, I don’t know

Whoah, I don’t know
Track Name: I Won't Be
Like a curse befell
or a sickness caught
my body wants you
but my head does not whoa

it’s not your fault
that your curves can call
to a primal drive
That I strive to hide

I won’t touch you (touch you)
although I long too (long too)
I feel unsteady (unsteady)
please don’t let me

lose my way here (touch you)
it’s my instincts I fear (I fear)
but my lips won’t touch you
I won’t be the boy who lost control

the desire,
how it tortures me
I can control my hands
but my brain won’t let me be

my eyes can’t linger
not hug or finger
can be out of line
there is a choice this time I can control my mind

I won’t touch you (touch you)
although I long too (long too)
I feel unsteady (unsteady)
please don’t let me

lose my way here (touch you)
it’s my instincts I fear (I fear)
but my lips won’t touch you
I won’t be the boy who lost control

Boy who lost, control
Track Name: I Made This
I know that I’ve been waiting
I can’t push I’m hesitating but I should way-oh
My youth I feel it fading
Back down your getting grating
By now you’d think I matter more, and sure

I’ve had my share of moments
Feeling special under lights like a grownup
And when I think I’ve got it
When I think I’m stepping up
The next chapter’s beginning
Now I’m finished warming up up up oh

Stolen, woven me

Whoah

I’ll take this oh
I made this oh
Why I’m contagious oh I
No map that I have charted, no dreams to crush
If I hadn’t got started, there would be no rush

I’m just the right amount of good so it sucks to exist
I can’t quit cuz there’s people that like and I like it and I could never resist
The attention, the dreams, the fantasy
The mind altering screams meant for me

And I knock, but the doors locked
Tick tock, pop rock me

Oh but the bodies high

I’ll take this oh
I made this oh
No big parade but I’ll keep marching on

I’ve tried other careers
And I think I have five more good years
I’m not ready to let it end here
And I think I might make it but I fear

I, I, I’ll take this
I Made this
Contagious oh I am
I have this map I’ve started, and a ways to go
Yeah!
Track Name: This Question
I have this question I ask
and often there’s answers I don’t believe
And maybe it’s faith that I lack
More likely I think I just don’t want to leave

And if I come back as one blade of grass
I won’t have my sentience anymore
But to know that well there’s something next
Not human, but any life at alls worth waiting for

Oh cuz most my pains just pressure
And it’s the thought I can’t endure

Endless, I dream of this life
Up in the clouds that are fluffy and white
I need a fantasy world full of light
Cuz without at moments it can get hard to even breathe

Oh cuz most my pains just pressure
Feeding fear inside of me

And will I look back someday fondly upon this song
Was I right to fear death cuz when you’re gone you’re gone
And time ticks on but you’re gone you’re gone
And time ticks on, and you’re gone you’re gone
Gone you’re gone
Track Name: Dandelions
Because my mom used to say
Rip this weed
Out from the ground and pull real hard
Cuz the roots go deep

Oh yellow heads, green leaves, long thin stem
Oh dandelions, oh dandelions
Oh how I’ve missed them

Because my mom used to say
Rip this weed
Out from the ground and pull real hard
Cuz the roots go deep

Atrophying
I’ve been to work but why in
The desert, It’s fine
But oh how I’ve missed
Oh I’ve missed you Dandelion
Track Name: Berries Do It Better
We all hope that we get murdered, that is our goal
take your white sword from your sheath
There is a greater plan for seeds that fall
now kill us with your teeth

now kill us with your teeth

berries do it better cuz they’re not afraid to die
berries do it better cuz they don’t believe in me or my
when my time comes, when my time comes
I need to know, I need to know
how the berries do it better cuz that’s the way to go

we believe and live the cycle, don’t ask how or why
dive to the ground don’t say goodbye
There has always been oh can’t you tell a bigger dream
see our color, and our sheen

berries do it better cuz they’re not afraid to die
berries do it better cuz they don’t believe in me or my
when my time comes, when my time comes
I need to know, I need to know
how the berries do it better cuz afraid I am although
that’s the way to go
Track Name: A Little Thing That Matters
I’ve been building up my tendency to stop breathing
I’ve been making up my mind to sleep in mud
I’ve been slowing my final astrocaryum
And waiting for that first aspen
I’m waiting for that first aspen
I’m waiting for that first aspen to bud

Tuck in my legs
And I’ll freeze up my heart

Kick start my heart yeah it’s way too hot for me to keep sleeping
Yeah my first steps aren’t graceful and my jump ends with a thud
The vines they are sprouting the snow I am doubting the peepers are peeping

You can’t kill me just with cold
You can’t keep this rana slow
Come on winter a hint here
I was born with antifreeze in my blood

A new spring has come
Though my body’s still a little numb

Cuz it’s the little things that matter
Like coming back to life
It’s those small moments that you notice
And must remember during strife

You can find hundreds every week
Just keep it down for tiny miracles

you can hear them hear them hear

if you just let them speak
